HAGERSTOWN, MD News (10/27/2023) – Dr. Brenda Thiam, a prominent educator and former Maryland delegate, has officially announced her candidacy for Congress in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District. With a strong focus on education, law enforcement, crime, and the economy, Dr. Thiam brings a wealth of experience to the race, as well as a commitment to serving the people of Hagerstown and the broader region.

Dr. Thiam’s announcement comes with a clear vision for the future and a deep understanding of the issues that matter most to her constituents. During an interview with our news station, she outlined her priorities and provided insights into her campaign platform.

One of the key takeaways from Dr. Thiam’s experience as a Maryland delegate is the importance of listening to constituents. She emphasized the need to engage with the community at various levels, from casual conversations in coffee shops to thoughtful discussions in the grocery store. Her approach transcends party lines, underlining her commitment to serving all members of her district, regardless of their political affiliation.

When asked about the opioid crisis and the efforts of her predecessor, David Trone, Dr. Thiam expressed her respect for his personal commitment to addressing the issue. However, she highlighted the ongoing work required to combat the crisis effectively.

Dr. Thiam’s background as a special educator, with a specialization in K-12 special education and experience as a school director for autistic children, informs her commitment to data-driven decision-making in the field of education. She aims to use her expertise to draft policies and legislation that prepare students for post-secondary education and other pathways, such as entering the workforce, military service, or trade schools.

Addressing the local economy, Dr. Thiam identified opportunities for attracting more high-paying jobs to Western Maryland. She emphasized the region’s potential for industries like cyber, IT, biotech, pharma, and data centers. In addition, she highlighted the arrival of Hitachi in Hagerstown to build metro and train cars, and the potential of Hagerstown Airport to attract more jobs, including partnerships with educational institutions like the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics and Sierra Nevada. Dr. Thiam also expressed a desire to encourage shipping companies like FedEx and UPS to use Hagerstown Airport for package logistics.

When asked why she decided to run for Congress, Dr. Thiam shared her frustration with the current state of national politics and her desire to be a part of positive change. She mentioned that her decision was partly driven by faith, stating that she prayed about running for delegate and felt called to serve on a larger scale. With the open congressional seat due to David Trone’s run for the Senate and favorable redistricting for Republicans, Dr. Thiam saw an opportunity to serve her community at a higher level.

Her commitment to addressing the role of parents in education, the importance of school choice, and the need for a focus on core education values, such as teaching students the basics of reading and mathematics, were also highlighted during the interview.

Dr. Thiam’s campaign emphasizes her dedication to serving her community and her ability to challenge the status quo. She believes in bipartisan cooperation, efficient government, and creating a prosperous business climate for Hagerstown and the State of Maryland.

Her campaign addresses critical issues such as education reform, law enforcement, crime reduction, and economic growth. Dr. Brenda Thiam’s extensive experience as a special educator and her commitment to her community make her a notable candidate in the upcoming congressional race.
