The fire was first detected by a resident of the Rose Hill Avenue portion of the duplex who was alerted by their smoke alarms. Upon investigation, this resident observed smoke entering their living space from the adjacent unit on E. Wilson Boulevard. Upon exiting their home, they witnessed significant smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the neighboring property and promptly contacted emergency services. The Hagerstown Fire Department responded to a two-alarm incident, deploying approximately 40 firefighters who worked for an hour to gain control of the fire. The fire’s origin has been traced to the ceiling space of the kitchen area.

Critically, while the occupants of the E. Wilson Boulevard side of the duplex were reportedly out of town when the fire started, the activation of the smoke alarm system was instrumental in enabling two adults, two children, and a family dog residing on the Rose Hill Avenue side to evacuate their home safely. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported in connection with the incident. The fire has resulted in the displacement of five individuals from the two-family residence. The Office of the State Fire Marshal is continuing its investigation into the cause of the fire.

The initial dispatch call for the fire reported the address as 301 W. Wilson Boulevard, based upon the address provided in the 911 call. Upon arrival at 12:21 AM, Engine 5 reported a two-story single-family house. Subsequent units, including Engine 2, Engine 4, and Battalion 3, arrived shortly thereafter. Firefighters conducted a preliminary check of the reported address, knocking on doors and finding no visible signs of smoke or heat, nor any indication of a fire within the structure. At 12:27 AM, dispatch corrected the address to 301 E. Wilson Boulevard. Engine 2 was first on scene to the correct location, and arrived at 12:28 AM and reported smoke on the east side of a two-story residence. Battalion 3 and remaining units arrived at the correct address of 301 E. Wilson Boulevard by 12:29 AM and 12:31 AM respectively, and began suppression efforts. This delay in reaching the correct location, caused by the initial miscommunication of the address, underscores the vital role accurate information plays in emergency response.

The fire at 301 East Wilson Boulevard serves as a serious reminder of how critical it is for 911 callers to provide accurate information during an emergency. Our dispatchers rely on what callers tell them to send help to the right place as quickly as possible. Even a few minutes’ delay caused by an incorrect address can make a tremendous difference in how an incident unfolds.

It is especially important for those calling from cell phones to be precise. Depending on where you are geographically, your phone may connect to a tower in a different county, which can cause your call to be routed incorrectly. This is why it is vital to clearly state your full location, including the street address and the city or town—for example, “123 Main Street, Boonsboro”—so responders know exactly where to go.

911 dispatchers are trained to ask the right questions and use mapping systems to verify locations, but the accuracy of the information provided by the caller remains essential. Taking a moment to confirm your full address or nearest landmark can save valuable time and lives.

Washington County continues to review incidents like this one to strengthen training, improve systems, and increase public awareness about how to best assist 911 operators. Every second counts and ensuring accuracy from the very start helps protect everyone involved.

Statement from Washington County Government

Fires can spread with extreme rapidity; it is estimated that fires can double in size every 30 to 60 seconds, and within eight minutes, a fire can grow by 64 times its initial size. The progression to flashover, a rapid spreading of fire due to super-heated room contents, typically occurs within 7 to 10 minutes.

In such critical situations, every second counts, and even a reduction of a few minutes in response time can significantly impact the survivability of those involved.
