The blaze was discovered by a resident of the Rose Hill Avenue side of the duplex who was alerted by their smoke alarms. Upon investigation, they observed smoke infiltrating their living space from the adjacent E. Wilson Boulevard unit. Exiting their home, they witnessed significant smoke and flames emanating from the second floor of the neighboring property and immediately contacted emergency services. Responding to a two-alarm incident, approximately 40 firefighters from the Hagerstown Fire Department worked for one hour to bring the fire under control.

The fire originated in the ceiling space of the kitchen area. While the occupants of the E. Wilson Boulevard side were reportedly out of town when the fire began, the smoke alarm system’s activation was crucial in allowing two adults, two children, and a family dog residing on the Rose Hill Avenue side to safely evacuate their home. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths were reported in connection with the incident. The fire has displaced a total of five occupants from the two-family residence. The Office of the State Fire Marshal is continuing its investigation into the incident.
