The recent influx of yard debris due to storms has led to a surplus of mulch at the landfill, prompting the county to open access to residents for personal use. While the mulch is free, there are specific guidelines: participants must be Washington County residents with proof of residency, must load the mulch themselves, and all vehicles must be tarped to comply with Maryland state regulations. Commercial businesses and non-residents are not eligible for the free offer but can still purchase mulch at the standard rate of $30 per ton.
The landfill will be open for mulch pickup Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with all vehicles required to exit via the outbound scale by 3:15 p.m. Entry for free mulch pickup will not be permitted after 2:30 p.m. To ensure an orderly process, residents are required to weigh in and out at the landfill and follow marked signage to the designated mulch collection area, which is separate from the commercial mulch sales zone.

This initiative serves both as an environmental benefit and a space management solution, encouraging residents to participate in the reuse of natural storm debris while enhancing their own properties. County officials are urging eligible individuals to act promptly, as supplies are limited and the distribution will conclude once the current stockpile is exhausted.
