According to preliminary findings, the incident stemmed from a disagreement over access to a vehicle. The homeowner stated that her granddaughter, identified as Kylie Renee Mills, became agitated after being denied use of a car. This reportedly led to the suspect becoming destructive within the home, throwing items, and issuing verbal threats to set the property ablaze. The homeowner further alleged that Mills attempted to ignite a wicker basket in a bedroom using a lighter and also lit a cigarette, which she then discarded on the living room floor.
Upon examination of the property, Deputy State Fire Marshals discovered physical evidence that corroborated the homeowner’s account. This evidence included damage to a wicker basket and visible charring on the hardwood floors of the living room, consistent with the alleged attempts to start a fire.
As a direct result of the investigation, 26-year-old Kylie Renee Mills of Hagerstown was taken into custody. She faces charges of Attempted First-Degree Arson and Threat of Arson. Mills has since been transferred to the Washington County Detention Center, where she is being held without the possibility of bond.
Residents of Washington County are reminded of the serious legal consequences associated with arson and threats of violence.
