The affected thrift store is a vital source of funding for numerous programs and services provided by The Salvation Army of Hagerstown. These initiatives include emergency assistance, distribution of grocery bags, the Mana Soup Kitchen, a Women’s and Children’s Family Shelter, and the Red Shield Youth Center, which offers after-school programs for students. The closure of the store impacts the ability to sustain these essential community resources.
“It is a sad time for our community because the store was a destination for local shoppers, and we employ 25 individuals. Funds from the sales at the Thrift Store support our work with those in need, helping to provide emergency assistance, grocery bags, our Mana Soup Kitchen, Women’s and Children’s Family Shelter, and our Red Shield Youth Center programs for after-school students,” said Major Mark Van Meter, the commanding officer at The Salvation Army of Hagerstown.
Following the incident, discussions with local community leaders have yielded promising offers of assistance. Goodwill Stores of Washington County has extended an offer to help employ the now-unemployed staff from The Salvation Army’s thrift store. Additionally, both Goodwill Industries and Brooke’s House have proposed contributing inventory to help stock a new store location. The Salvation Army of Hagerstown is actively pursuing a temporary site for a new thrift store, with hopes of reopening within the next few months.
