First responders from the Hancock Volunteer Fire Company and the Hancock Police Department were dispatched to the Hess Road address shortly after 12:30 AM. Upon arrival, responding officers found the occupant attempting to set the house on fire. Law enforcement officers were able to subdue the situation, apprehending the individual and extinguishing the nascent fire using a fire extinguisher before it could spread significantly. The fire was controlled within five minutes of the initial alarm.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the fire originated in the garage and was intentionally set using an open flame applied to common combustibles. Fortunately, the incident resulted in no injuries or deaths, and no individuals were displaced from the home. The estimated monetary loss is $15 in estimated loss to contents. Smoke alarms at the residence did not activate, and no fire alarm or sprinkler systems were present or involved.

The occupant has been taken into custody and is undergoing emergency medical and psychiatric evaluation at Meritus Medical Center. Charges are pending the outcome of these evaluations.
