Hancock, MD – An attempted arson incident at a single-family residence on Hess Road in Hancock resulted in the arrest of an occupant who allegedly attempted to set the home ablaze, according to an investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The incident, which occurred in the early morning hours of October 15, 2025, saw the occupant report his intentions to dispatchers before actively trying to ignite the structure.

First responders from the Hancock Volunteer Fire Company and the Hancock Police Department were dispatched to the Hess Road address shortly after 12:30 AM. Upon arrival, responding officers found the occupant attempting to set the house on fire. Law enforcement officers were able to subdue the situation, apprehending the individual and extinguishing the nascent fire using a fire extinguisher before it could spread significantly. The fire was controlled within five minutes of the initial alarm.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the fire originated in the garage and was intentionally set using an open flame applied to common combustibles.
