Responding to a single alarm call, ten firefighters from the Hancock Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the scene at 25 S. South Street in Hancock. Upon arrival, they found a 30-foot bumper pull travel trailer involved in flames. The fire was brought under control within five minutes of their arrival.
The preliminary investigation determined the cause of the fire to be accidental, stemming from a malfunction in the electrical service connection to an oil-filled radiant electric heater. The fire originated in a wall cabinet near the main entrance of the trailer.
Fortunately, the trailer was being used solely for recreational purposes, and there were no occupants inside at the time of the fire. Consequently, no individuals were displaced, and no injuries were reported. The estimated loss due to the fire is $5,000 for the structure and $500 for the contents. The trailer was equipped with a functioning smoke alarm.
