The first emergency calls reporting the house fire and potential entrapment were received at approximately 8:40 a.m. Deputies from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office were the first to arrive on the scene. They discovered that two adult occupants had managed to escape the burning structure without injury. These individuals informed deputies that as many as six other people might still be inside. Despite attempts to enter the home, deputies were unable to do so due to the intensity of the smoke and flames.
Within minutes of the initial call, firefighters from the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department, along with crews from surrounding departments, arrived. The incident was quickly upgraded to a two-alarm fire as firefighters worked to bring the fire under control and conduct a search for victims. Tragically, during the firefighting and rescue efforts, two additional adults and four children were found deceased within the home. Another adult occupant arrived at the scene while fire suppression efforts were underway.
Assistance in the investigation and recovery efforts was provided by K9 “Taylor,” the Calvert K-9 Search Team, and the Charles County Collapse Team, which was called in to shore up sections of the home due to significant structural damage from the fire. While the investigation into the fire’s origin and cause is ongoing, initial findings indicate that the fire started on an enclosed porch located on the right side of the residence. The identities and ages of the victims will be officially confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, which will also be responsible for determining the precise cause of each fatality.
A joint investigation involving the Office of the State Fire Marshal and local authorities is standard procedure for fatal fires. The involvement of the ATF is also routine in investigations of fires that result in multiple fatalities or significant property damage.
