Residents of Maugansville may notice smoke rising from manholes and rooftop vents this week as the Washington County Department of Water Quality performs a diagnostic test on the local sewer infrastructure. According to a press release from Washington County Government, the testing is scheduled for July 22 through July 25, 2025, between 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and will take place north of Maugans Avenue, specifically in the Seneca Ridge and Countryside neighborhoods.

The smoke test is designed to detect leaks, cracks, or unauthorized connections within the sewer system. Officials will introduce a non-toxic, odorless smoke into the pipes; any visible emissions from the ground or buildings help identify structural defects or areas requiring maintenance. The smoke is not harmful and should not enter homes unless there are existing plumbing issues such as defective traps or dry drains.

While the presence of smoke may be startling, residents are advised that it is part of a routine inspection and poses no safety threat. However, if smoke is observed inside a residence, it may indicate a plumbing problem that the homeowner should address. Residents with concerns or questions are encouraged to contact the Department of Water Quality directly at 240-313-2600.

The testing supports long-term maintenance planning and helps avoid future disruptions or costly repairs to the sewer system. Residents are not required to take any specific action but should be aware of the activity and ensure all drain traps in their homes contain water to reduce the chance of smoke entering through unused plumbing fixtures.
