The funding is part of nearly $500 million distributed nationwide through the BUILD program, aimed at improving infrastructure in both urban and rural communities. With the backing of the Maryland Department of Transportation, the grant will allow the county to move forward with planning the facility, which will support administrative operations, driver training, fleet maintenance, and future service expansions. Local residents can expect improvements in transit efficiency and accessibility, particularly benefiting workers, seniors, and students who rely on bus services.
Design work is scheduled to begin later this year. The new facility will be constructed at Washington County Transit’s existing site, allowing for continuity while addressing long-term operational and spatial needs. The development is expected to improve connections to employment centers, medical facilities, and other essential services, especially in sectors like logistics and warehousing, which are experiencing growth in the region.

This grant is a notable example of federal investment reaching smaller communities like Hagerstown, where local transportation improvements can have a direct impact on residents’ quality of life. No local tax funding is required for this stage of the project, as the federal award covers the design phase in full. Future phases, including construction, may be subject to additional funding requests or grants.
