The smoke test will target specific areas, including Highlane Street and Longmeadow Road between the railroad tracks and Marsh Pike, covering the vicinity of the Longmeadow Fire Company. The Department stated that the smoke is non-toxic and is used to identify potential issues within the sewer system. Seeing smoke coming from manholes or rooftop vents is expected and not a sign of danger.
This testing process helps detect any plumbing defects or unauthorized connections to the sewer system. County officials assured residents that smoke entering homes is unlikely unless there are existing plumbing problems. Anyone experiencing concerns or unusual conditions is encouraged to reach out to the Department of Water Quality at 240-313-2600.
The Department emphasized that the smoke test is a routine and important part of maintaining the community’s infrastructure.
