The issue stems from improper folding of the airbag during assembly, which may result in the airbag tearing upon deployment. This defect not only diminishes the airbag’s ability to protect passengers in a collision but could also cause hot gases to escape, posing a burn risk. All 657 vehicles impacted by the recall are estimated to have this defect.
Jaguar Land Rover first began investigating the issue in late 2024 after abnormal airbag deployment was observed during testing. A team of experts examined the issue through 2025, concluding that variability in the airbag folding was a likely contributor. In July 2025, the company’s Recall Determination Committee decided the problem posed an unreasonable safety risk, leading to the official recall.
