Jaguar Land Rover North America has announced a safety recall for certain 2020 model year Range Rover Evoque vehicles due to defects in the knee airbag modules. The recall, affecting over 2,700 vehicles, involves the right-hand and left-hand knee airbags, which may experience adhesive degradation, causing the airbag cushion cover to detach and become visible in the footwell. This issue could compromise airbag deployment in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

The recall is divided into two separate actions. The first, under NHTSA recall number 25V-088 (manufacturer recall N978), impacts 1,473 vehicles manufactured between January 30, 2019, and March 28, 2019. The right-hand knee airbag in these vehicles may not remain properly folded, potentially reducing its effectiveness in a crash. The second recall, 25V-089 (manufacturer recall N979), involves 1,270 vehicles produced between January 29, 2019, and May 1, 2019. This recall supersedes a previous action (N566) and addresses a similar defect in the left-hand knee airbag.

Jaguar Land Rover initiated an investigation after receiving multiple field reports of knee airbag cushions detaching. The company’s Product Safety and Compliance Committee (PSCC) reviewed the issue and escalated it to the Recall Determination Committee (RDC), which classified the defect as a safety concern requiring a recall. No accidents, injuries, or fires have been reported in connection with these defects, but Jaguar Land Rover has received 19 claims related to the issue in the United States.
Vehicle owners will be notified by April 11, 2025, and can have their knee airbag modules replaced at no cost at authorized Land Rover repair centers. Dealers will be informed of the recall by February 27, 2025. Vehicles still under warranty will be covered under the manufacturer’s new vehicle warranty program, while out-of-warranty repairs may be eligible for reimbursement under Jaguar Land Rover’s standard reimbursement policy.
