ICE Seeks Detention of Suspect in Fatal Maryland DUI Crash

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on an individual charged in a fatal wrong-way driving incident that resulted in the deaths of a mother and daughter in Montgomery County, Maryland. The detainer requests that Maryland officials hold the individual, who is alleged to be in the country illegally, pending further action by ICE, rather than releasing him into the community.

The incident, which occurred on August 29 on Interstate 270, involved a vehicle traveling the wrong way and colliding head-on with another car carrying four occupants. Tragically, two individuals, identified as 46-year-old Musammat Shamima Begum and her 23-year-old daughter Areebah Jahin, died as a result of the crash. Two other passengers in the vehicle, a 62-year-old man and an 8-year-old girl, sustained injuries and were transported to local medical facilities. Evidence gathered by investigators suggests that alcohol impairment was a significant factor in the collision.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, identified as Jose Antonio Caballero-Nolasco, a citizen of El Salvador, received medical treatment at a local hospital before being transferred to the Montgomery County Detention Center. Caballero-Nolasco faces multiple serious charges stemming from the incident, including two counts of gross negligent manslaughter, two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, and one count of life-threatening injury by a motor vehicle. ICE issued its detainer on September 1.
