Per a press release from the City of Martinsburg, longtime firefighter Brad Knieriem has been appointed as the next Fire Chief of the Martinsburg Fire Department. His promotion will take effect on July 28, 2025, succeeding Chief JD Hummingbird, who is retiring. The leadership change brings a familiar face to the department’s top role, with Knieriem having served Martinsburg for 20 years in various capacities.

Knieriem began his career with the Martinsburg Fire Department in 2005 and has served as Fire Marshal, Lieutenant, Captain, and Deputy Chief. In addition to his tenure with MFD, he has also held command positions with the Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Department. City officials emphasized his extensive command and administrative experience, as well as the strong internal support he received during the selection process.
The new fire chief will oversee a department of 36 professional firefighters responsible for fire suppression and emergency medical services within Martinsburg and neighboring jurisdictions through mutual aid agreements. The department responded to over 5,600 emergency calls in 2024 alone, including more than 4,200 EMS-related incidents.

Martinsburg residents can expect continuity in public safety services as Knieriem steps into the leadership role. His administrative background and long-standing relationships within the department are expected to support operational stability. The MFD operates out of two stations, with the primary headquarters on North Raleigh Street housing most personnel and equipment.
