For five years we’ve spent a lot of time giving away our news, for free. And with all things, “free” has a cost, and that cost has now come due. Without reader support, Radio Free Hub City cannot survive long-term.
Radio Free Hub City has been a labor of love, with very little return on investment due to declining ad revenues. We have a small core readership and a couple occasional sponsors which have helped overcome the revenue challenges, but revenue still isn’t where it needs to be for Radio Free Hub City to expand to where I would love to see it go – where the community needs it to go. And honestly, with inflation and rising costs of doing business, it’s becoming a struggle to keep the lights on.
Local news has been on life support for several years now. Our local newspaper has one reporter left, and one sports reporter. Our local TV station is gone. There’s a few local radio stations, but none that really dedicate to in-depth investigation and reporting like we do. If we disappear, that local voice goes with us. Of course, many in local government will likely celebrate if that happens, because then who will keep them accountable?
We don’t want to lock our news behind a wealthy paywall—we believe everyone in Washington County deserves access to the truth. But we cannot do it alone anymore. If everyone who relies on our reporting contributed just $5 per month, the future of independent local news here would be entirely secure.
