We need your help to stay paywall free

We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. We're literally running on a shoe-string budget, but keep working hard to provide as much news and entertainment as we can.

If just 5% of local area residents became paid supporters at only $5 per month, we could meet our fundraising goals and continue expanding our news coverage depth while continuing to provide free access for everyone. So, if you'd like to help us in our continuing quest to improve our coverage, please consider becoming a paying supporter.

Will you be one of the 5%?

The meeting will start at 9:00 am with the approval of minutes from the previous session, followed by updates from commissioners and staff. A significant highlight will be the presentation of a proclamation recognizing June as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, aimed at raising public awareness and support for individuals and families affected by dementia-related illnesses.

Following the proclamation, the commissioners will consider the award of a stop-loss insurance coverage contract to Highmark of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This coverage is crucial for managing large medical and prescription drug claims, safeguarding the county’s financial interests. Proposals were solicited from multiple providers, with Highmark offering the most responsive bid.

Additionally, the agenda includes the results and award of a new natural gas supply contract. Washington County Government and the Washington County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association will partner with WGL Energy Services, Inc., under a five-year fixed-rate agreement, expected to generate significant savings over previous rates.

Other items on the agenda involve awarding contracts for grounds maintenance chemicals for various county departments and approving a new contract for mowing services across several county retention ponds. The latter was awarded to Young’s Lawn Service, LLC, a local Hagerstown business, for their competitive bid.

A closed session will follow, during which the commissioners will discuss personnel matters, appointments to key committees, legal updates including PFAS litigation, and matters concerning business development and public security. The board will reconvene for an evening session at 6:00 p.m. to meet with leaders from the Town of Boonsboro, continuing the day’s focus on collaboration and regional issues.
