We need your help to stay paywall free

We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. We're literally running on a shoe-string budget, but keep working hard to provide as much news and entertainment as we can.

If just 5% of local area residents became paid supporters at only $5 per month, we could meet our fundraising goals and continue expanding our news coverage depth while continuing to provide free access for everyone. So, if you'd like to help us in our continuing quest to improve our coverage, please consider becoming a paying supporter.

Among the agenda’s key ceremonial items are proclamations honoring two longstanding local institutions. The Community Free Clinic will be recognized for 35 years of service in providing free medical and mental health care to the uninsured. Horizon Goodwill Industries, Inc. will receive a proclamation celebrating its 70th anniversary of delivering workforce development and sustainability initiatives across the region. A Youth Meritorious Award will also be presented to Maddox Aguilar of Smithsburg Middle School for his contributions to the community and academic excellence.

The commissioners will also consider a request to apply for and accept $48,000 in grant funding from the Maryland 9-1-1 Board to support Language Line interpretation services, a tool used to assist non-English speakers during emergency calls. This funding is critical to ensuring inclusive and efficient communication within the county’s emergency response systems.

Two contract renewals will be presented for approval. One involves extending the county’s trash removal services contract with Republic Services, which includes a 4.9% rate increase justified by inflation indices. Another seeks approval for a three-year renewal of a sole-source contract with Darktrace, a cybersecurity vendor. The $273,712.75 agreement includes advanced email protection and network monitoring tools to improve the county’s cyber defenses.

Later in the day, the meeting will enter closed session to discuss sensitive personnel matters and appointments to advisory boards. The session will conclude with a public hearing on the FY26 budget at 6:00 p.m. at the Public Safety Training Center in Hagerstown.
