In today’s polarized political climate, the line between spirited debate and outright hostility continues to blur. A recent social media post has ignited fresh outrage—not over policy or leadership, but over something far more disturbing: a gleeful public fantasy about the death of President Donald Trump. The post, shared by the local Democratic club “United Democrats of Washington County, MD” (UDWC) shows a mock military funeral procession with a casket draped in the American flag and surrounded by cheering crowds holding signs like “Ding dong, the dick is dead.” This grotesque depiction, far from political discourse, reflects a moral collapse that transcends partisanship.

“When I shared the rather tasteless image which you wrote about I was focused on the text, not the image,” wrote a representative of UDWC in an email to us. “My mistake, which has obviously tarnished our public image. An object lesson of the dangers when I’m moving fast.”
I was severely injured by the COVID vaccine and mandates for Federal employees and contractors, and still suffer to this day because of it. My suffering, my grievances are likely much more personal than the grievances currently held by UDWC against President Trump. To this day I still fight to promote awareness of COVID vaccine injuries, and am in fact leading an awareness rally Thursday. However, despite all my suffering, not once have I ever wished death upon President Biden or Dr. Fauci.
No matter one’s political allegiance, wishing death upon any person—political leader or not—is a line that should never be crossed, and should never be shared even if accidentally. These kinds of posts are highly believed to be contributing factors to attempted assassination of President Trump, and civil society depends on the shared understanding that life is sacred, disagreement is healthy, and the solution to differing views is debate, not dehumanization. The celebration of death, particularly in a public and performative way, doesn’t signal virtue or moral superiority. It signals a void in basic human decency. The image doesn’t just mock a current president—it mocks the solemnity of national mourning and spits in the face of those who still believe in dignity, even for their adversaries.
To wish for a political opponent’s death is not “resistance.” It is not a joke. It is a dangerous normalization of hatred. This isn’t about Trump alone. Today it’s him; tomorrow it could be any other public figure. By endorsing such sentiments—even in satire—one helps erode the very norms that keep our political system from becoming a total battleground. In America, the answer to bad leadership is better leadership, not bloodlust. And while UDWC has stated this was a mistake, the damage has been done.

If this image had targeted any figure on the political left, it would be rightly condemned as hateful by UDWC, and we wouldn’t hesitate to criticize such posts if they came from for example the Washington County Maryland Republican Club. That same standard must apply regardless of who is in the crosshairs. Celebrating death isn’t funny, it isn’t clever, and it certainly isn’t patriotic. It is cruel. And when cruelty becomes a staple of political expression, the entire country loses.
We can and should argue, protest, vote, and criticize—but when we stop recognizing the humanity of those we oppose, we’ve already lost something essential. The true test of a free society is not how it treats its allies, but how it restrains itself in its treatment of its adversaries. Civility is still the foundation of a republic worth preserving.
After receiving multiple comments criticizing the image, UDWC deleted the post and replaced it with a modified version of the original caption, focusing on the parade and omitting glorifying the prospect of Trump’s death:
The U.S. Army is planning a historic parade through the streets of Washington, D.C. that just happens to fall on President Trump’s 79th birthday on June 14. The Army said, “Parade planning is actively underway, and we anticipate approximately 150 vehicles, 50 aircraft, and 6,600 Soldiers to highlight the Army’s 250 years of service to the nation.” This large military parade has long been a desire of Trump.
Defense officials told NBC News that the estimated cost could be as high as $45 million. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said, “If military tanks were used, they should be accompanied with many millions of dollars to repair the roads.”
Naturally, Trump has said that he believes the expense would be worthwhile. $45 million of deficit reduction is something many of us would prefer.
And the sad thing is, had UDWC simply stuck to that messaging, focusing on the $45 million price tag of a parade in DC, I would absolutely agree with them about this being wasteful. But that messaging was absolutely lost by sharing such a hateful image.
Hate and wishing death on politicians has no place in civilized society, and while I’m glad UDWC deleted the absolutely despicable post, it should never have been shared to begin with.
