Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott has announced an immediate activation of a spring youth safety initiative focused on high-traffic areas, launching ahead of the full rollout of the city’s summer engagement strategy. Through the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, outreach teams have already begun working in areas where youth congregate, particularly during weekends, to provide support, prevent violence, and connect young people with community resources.

We need your help to stay paywall free

We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. We're literally running on a shoe-string budget, but keep working hard to provide as much news and entertainment as we can.

If just 5% of local area residents became paid supporters at only $5 per month, we could meet our fundraising goals and continue expanding our news coverage depth while continuing to provide free access for everyone. So, if you'd like to help us in our continuing quest to improve our coverage, please consider becoming a paying supporter.

Youth engagement teams have been on-site over the past two weekends and will now be deployed every Friday and Saturday night, as well as Sunday nights during holiday weekends, through the end of the summer. The initiative emphasizes proactive outreach, conflict de-escalation, and relationship-building. The City has also scheduled a range of spring break activities for youth, including camps and mobile recreation opportunities through Baltimore’s Department of Recreation and Parks. Programming will culminate in a Spring Break Teen Fest at Druid Hill Park on Saturday, April 19.

The initiative also introduces a new collaboration with local nonprofit B-360, which uses dirt bike culture to promote STEM education. B-360 recently opened its first physical center at Harborplace, which will function as a weekend Youth Connection Center to provide tutoring and essential services. City outreach teams, alongside community groups such as For My Kidz, Redesigning Minds, The Movement Team, and The PEACE Team, will use this space to further connect with youth requiring guidance or intervention.

This season’s engagement strategy builds on last summer’s effort, which combined supportive outreach with non-traditional curfew interventions and community programming. The 2023 activation coincided with significant reductions in youth violence, including a 66 percent drop in shooting victimizations and a 31 percent decline in aggravated assaults among young people. Mayor Scott plans to release the full details of the 2025 summer youth engagement strategy in the coming weeks.
