Maryland is set to observe Severe Storms Awareness Week from April 7 to April 13, 2025, with state agencies encouraging residents to prepare for spring and summer weather hazards. In partnership with the National Weather Service, the Maryland Department of Emergency Management is urging citizens to participate in “The Great Maryland Twister Test,” a tornado drill scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, at 10 a.m. The initiative emphasizes awareness and readiness through a series of daily educational campaigns focusing on different weather threats.

The theme for this year’s campaign is “Don’t Get Caught in the Storm – Be MdReady,” and residents are encouraged to utilize tools like the MdReady WebApp and text alert systems available in English, Spanish, and over 180 additional languages. The app offers instant access to emergency notifications and preparedness tips. MDEM stresses the importance of multiple alert systems and encourages all Marylanders to review and rehearse their emergency plans ahead of any severe weather events.
Each day of the week will focus on a specific hazard common to Maryland during the storm season. Monday will highlight flood safety, emphasizing the dangers of crossing floodwaters. Tuesday’s topic is damaging winds, which have historically caused significant destruction in the state. On Wednesday, the focus shifts to tornadoes, accompanied by the statewide drill supported by three regional National Weather Service offices. Schools, businesses, and residents are invited to conduct their tornado safety exercises at 10 a.m. or any other convenient time that day.

Thursday’s message will address the risks of hail, which can form under the extreme conditions of severe thunderstorms. MDEM warns that larger hailstones are often associated with more dangerous storms. Friday will close out the awareness week with a focus on lightning safety, noting that most lightning casualties occur outdoors, often far from the visible storm. The key message: “When thunder roars, head indoors.”
Additional resources and preparedness information are available on the MDEM website, including detailed guidance on flooding, tornadoes, and other weather-related emergencies. Social media updates will also be shared throughout the week across various platforms to reach a broad audience.
