The 2-star overall rating signifies Meritus’ performance across categories such as mortality rates, safety of care, readmissions, and timely and effective care. Mortality metrics, an essential measure of quality, showed that six of seven indicators were reported, all either meeting or exceeding the national average. Similarly, safety of care measures demonstrated a strong performance, with two indicators surpassing and five meeting national standards. However, one measure fell below national expectations. The hospital also met national averages in readmission rates, with eight of eleven metrics meeting national average, and two measures lower than national average.
In the realm of patient experience, Meritus achieved a 3-star rating based on feedback from 457 surveyed patients, reflecting mixed outcomes. While 75% of respondents indicated that nurses communicated effectively—on par with Maryland’s state average but below the national average of 80%—only 58% reported receiving timely assistance, significantly below the national benchmark of 66%. Additionally, 68% of patients found their rooms clean, matching the Maryland average but falling short of the national standard. Patient quietness ratings were notably low, with only 50% reporting quiet surroundings at night compared to 62% nationally. Despite these challenges, 89% of patients stated they received adequate discharge instructions, and 65% expressed they would recommend the hospital, slightly below the national benchmark of 70%.

Timely and effective care metrics reveal areas where Meritus performs strongly and others that require attention. The hospital reported that 80% of sepsis patients received appropriate care, a figure significantly higher than both state and national averages. In emergency care, stroke patients received brain scans within 45 minutes of arrival 81% of the time, exceeding national and Maryland averages. However, emergency department wait times remain a concern, with an average of 217 minutes, which, while better than the state average for comparable hospitals of 238 minutes, is longer than the national average of 197 minutes.
Other performance highlights include a 94% adherence rate to follow-up colonoscopy recommendations, which is above the national average of 92%. However, data on cataract surgery outcomes—a common procedure—was not available for assessment. Emergency department care also saw a low percentage of patients (4%) leaving before being seen, which is slightly above the national average but better than the state’s rate.
These metrics indicate Meritus Medical Center’s strengths in clinical outcomes and specific measures of care but also highlight opportunities to enhance the patient experience and operational efficiency. The 2-star overall rating and 3-star patient survey rating provide a roadmap for improvement while reassuring patients of the hospital’s competence in critical areas. With ongoing evaluation and targeted interventions, Meritus has the potential to further elevate its quality of care and patient satisfaction.
