Readmission rates are critical indicators of hospital quality, reflecting how often patients return to the hospital after discharge. Meritus Medical Center reported on ten out of eleven measures in this category, with one measure above the national average, eight measures at the national average, and one measure below the national average. The high rate of average performance suggests consistent quality in managing patient care post-discharge, although there remains room for enhancement.
Patient experience is evaluated through the HCAHPS survey, which measures patients’ perspectives on their care. Meritus Medical Center’s survey results indicate some areas where it trails national and state averages:
- 73% of patients reported that nurses always communicated well, compared to the national average of 79%.
- 73% of patients stated that doctors always communicated well, below the national average of 80%.
- 57% of patients felt they received help as soon as they wanted, versus the national average of 66%.
- Only 55% of patients reported that staff always explained medications, compared to the national average of 62%.
- 64% of patients rated their room and bathroom as always clean, lower than the national average of 73%.
Despite these lower scores, 88% of patients reported receiving information about recovery at home, higher than the national average of 86%. Additionally, 65% of patients would definitely recommend the hospital, slightly below the national average of 69%.
This category examines how promptly and effectively hospitals deliver care that leads to the best patient outcomes. Meritus Medical Center reported on nine out of twelve measures:
- 82% of patients received appropriate care for severe sepsis and/or septic shock, well above the national average of 60%.
- For colonoscopy follow-up, 94% of patients received appropriate recommendations, exceeding the national average of 92%.
- Emergency department metrics showed 4% of patients left before being seen, slightly above the national average of 3%, but the hospital performed exceptionally in providing timely brain scans for stroke patients, with 96% receiving scans within 45 minutes compared to the national average of 69%.
Complications and infection rates are critical in assessing hospital quality. For instance, Meritus Medical Center’s rate of surgical site infections from colon surgery was 2.605, worse than the national benchmark of 1.000. However, the hospital’s performance was better than the national benchmark for MRSA and C. diff infections.
Overall, Meritus Medical Center exhibits a strong performance in certain areas such as sepsis care and follow-up colonoscopy recommendations, while showing room for improvement in patient communication and certain infection control measures. These mixed results highlight the hospital’s strengths and areas needing attention, positioning it as a reliable healthcare provider with potential for further enhancement in quality care delivery. Meritus has an overall rating of three out of five stars with the same rating for patient surveys, which is on-par with Frederick Health Hospital, but below nearby Waynesboro Wellspan Hospital which has an overall five star rating and four-star patient survey rating.
