Massive Surge in VPN Usage in Southern U.S. Linked to Online Age Verification Laws

Proton, the company behind ProtonVPN, has reported a significant increase in new users originating from the United States. This surge comes as a direct result of recently enacted age verification laws in southern states targeting access to online adult content. These laws have led major platforms, such as PornHub and its affiliates, to block users in states where compliance with the legislation is deemed unfeasible.

The new laws, implemented in 19 states since early 2023 according to the Age Verification Providers Association, require websites hosting adult material to verify the age of users through government-issued identification or other certified methods. While proponents argue these measures protect minors, critics have raised concerns about privacy risks and the potential for significant personal data collection by commercial entities. In response, many individuals have turned to virtual private networks (VPNs) to bypass geographic restrictions imposed by these platforms.

Affected platforms, including PornHub, Brazzers, and RedTube, have opted to block access in states enforcing these laws, citing operational challenges and the risk of legal liability. States such as Florida, Tennessee, and South Carolina were among the latest to implement these measures on January 1, 2025, prompting a wave of blocked users and driving further demand for VPN services.

Industry experts warn that the legislative push may inadvertently expose users to unsafe alternatives as individuals seek unregulated sources for adult content. These alternatives may lack safeguards against malicious software or illegal activities. Privacy advocates have also voiced concerns over the growing market for age-verification technologies, which could amass extensive personal data with limited oversight.
