The Maryland State Department of Education’s annual Maryland Public Schools Report Card, which evaluates schools based on academic and non-academic indicators, revealed that 56% of WCPS schools earned four- or five-star ratings, surpassing the statewide average of 41%. Additionally, 97% of WCPS schools received three or more stars, compared to 83% of schools statewide.
Notably, the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts and Old Forge Elementary School achieved five-star ratings, placing them among the top-performing 7% of schools in Maryland. These results reflect the district’s commitment to academic excellence and overall school performance during the 2023-2024 school year.

At the same time, the Washington County Board of Education (WCBOE) welcomed four members elected during the November 5, 2024, election. Returning member Dr. April Zentmeyer, along with new members Victoria Beachley, Charles Burkett, and Ashley McCusker, were sworn in to serve four-year terms.
During the Board’s reorganization meeting, Dr. Zentmeyer was elected President, and Michael Guessford was named Vice President. Dr. Zentmeyer has served on the Board since 2020, while Guessford has been a member since 2014.
