HAGERSTOWN, MD News (2/22/2024) – Eastern Elementary School, along with two Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) teachers and two students, is being recognized for their outstanding contributions to gifted and talented education by the Maryland State Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education.

Kimberlie Grabenstein and Stephanie Twigg, both teachers at Williamsport Elementary School, have been honored with Teacher Accomplishment in Gifted and Talented Education Awards. These awards commend educators who go above and beyond in addressing the needs of gifted and talented students, engage in continuous professional development, and exhibit leadership qualities by mentoring colleagues and developing innovative curriculum.

Similarly, Keilani Davis and Daniella Ayenu, students at Williamsport Elementary School, have been acknowledged with Student Accomplishment in Gifted and Talented Education Awards. Davis is celebrated for her exceptional leadership skills, academic performance, and active participation in various clubs and extracurricular activities. Ayenu’s accolade recognizes her outstanding academic achievements, involvement in extracurricular pursuits, and her noteworthy summer research project on sustainable living conducted at the William Brish Planetarium of Washington County Public Schools.

Moreover, Eastern Elementary School has been honored with the prestigious 2023 Maryland Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) School designation. This recognition is bestowed upon PK-12 Maryland Public Schools with gifted and talented education programs that align with the state’s Criteria for Excellence: Gifted and Talented Program Guidelines and the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 13a.04.07 Gifted and Talented Education. Only 14 schools statewide have received this esteemed designation this year, highlighting Eastern Elementary’s commitment to fostering excellence in gifted education.

The EGATE designation, awarded to Eastern Elementary, signifies a high standard of gifted education and will remain valid for five years. This recognition underscores the dedication of Eastern Elementary and its educators to providing enriching opportunities for gifted and talented students, ultimately contributing to their academic growth and success.
