Paywalls Suck - Help Us Stay Paywall Free

MARYLAND News (10/16/2024) – He was excluded from the Maryland senate debate, but that’s not stopping him from using his voice to promote his platform. Mike Scott, a Libertarian candidate for the U.S. Senate, brings a platform focused on shrinking government, cutting inefficiencies, and promoting individual liberty. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Scott served in the U.S. Air Force from 1990 to 2012, holding a variety of roles and earning degrees from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, and Central Michigan University. His career has included federal service, working at the Pentagon twice, and experience as a government contractor.

“This is what I’m proposing for America. We meet the basic needs of every man, woman, and child in America. We do it humanely and intelligently. We do it through building agency in the individual,” says Scott, “I am not talking about government interference. I’m talking the opposite. We try freedom.”

Scott advocates for significant reductions in federal government size and influence, criticizing what he sees as inefficiencies in education and healthcare. He argues that the federal government spends excessively while delivering poor outcomes, particularly in education, where he highlights low proficiency in schools despite high expenditures. Scott’s vision emphasizes local control, proposing that communities, cities, counties, and states should take on more responsibilities instead of relying on the federal government.

He identifies healthcare, education, equity, economy, and the environment as key areas requiring reform, but stresses that addressing these issues does not require more government intervention. Instead, Scott’s goal is to reduce the federal government’s footprint, introducing policies like term limits, campaign finance reform, and closing unnecessary federal agencies. He is particularly critical of the U.S. debt situation, pointing out that the country borrows over $1 trillion every few months, a trend he believes is unsustainable.

Scott sees himself as a Constitutionalist and a defender of individual liberty. He is a strong proponent of limiting government’s role to protecting citizens’ safety, liberty, and property, rather than solving societal problems or providing direct support. His campaign calls for reducing federal influence in areas like healthcare and education, focusing instead on fostering an environment where individuals and local communities can thrive independently.

With a broad range of experience across military, federal, and contractor roles, Scott touts his extensive knowledge of federal systems, acquisitions, and budgeting as key strengths. He also emphasizes the importance of shrinking the federal bureaucracy, citing the need for balance in government spending and a return to the principles laid out in the Constitution.

And while the Democrat and Republican candidates are raising and spending millions in the race, Scott is taking a different approach, using his voice instead of his wallet. As of June 30, 2024, Democratic candidate Angela Alsobrooks reported $12.47 million in campaign receipts, $8.91 million in disbursements, and had $3.56 million cash on hand. Republican candidate Larry Hogan reported $7 million in receipts, $4.34 million in disbursements, and $2.66 million cash on hand. Scott, however, reported no receipts, disbursements, or cash on hand. “Money can’t let me win – I need an asymmetrical attack in order to win,” said Scott.

Scott highlights his personal and professional journey, growing up in challenging environments and ultimately dedicating his career to public service. He encourages voters to evaluate his candidacy based on his commitment to reducing government, restoring fiscal responsibility, and enhancing individual freedoms. His approach rejects the traditional political system, advocating for a new path that prioritizes the will of the people over entrenched party structures and political elites.
