HAGERSTOWN, MD News (8/19/2024) – Our community is facing an increasing challenge with rising crime, prompting the need for swift and effective actions to restore safety in our community. As part of our commitment to Hagerstown’s well-being, Radio Free Hub City conducted an independent survey to gather insights directly from local residents. Our goal was to identify practical strategies to reduce criminal activity and enhance community safety, using data grounded in the real experiences of those living here. With resident tempers flaring and the recent release of a petition demanding the removal of the Hagerstown mayor and city administrator, we felt it important to release our findings in order to encourage finding reasonable solutions to the problems our community faces.

Between August 7 and August 8, 2024, we launched an anonymous survey designed to capture a snapshot of concerns and suggestions from Hagerstown residents. Although the survey is still open for additional input, we felt it was crucial to analyze the initial results and share them promptly with the community. The purpose of this report is to offer actionable recommendations based on these findings—recommendations that focus on initiatives requiring minimal government intervention, allowing for quicker implementation to address the pressing issue of crime.
The data we collected reveals common themes, particularly a strong desire for improved community safety measures and an interest in using technology to help prevent crime. We deliberately avoided diving into social or law enforcement-specific issues, such as the effectiveness of prosecution rates or debates on needle exchange programs, focusing instead on identifying measures that residents and community leaders can implement swiftly and independently.

One of the most significant findings was the potential impact of combining security cameras with neighborhood watch programs and, where possible, increasing police presence. While more police officers may depend on city resources, our survey highlighted that steps like neighborhood watch programs and the deployment of security cameras can be initiated by community members without waiting for government action.
Additionally, the survey showed strong support for the strategic placement of security cameras in key locations throughout neighborhoods. With consumer-grade doorbell cameras now costing as little as $15 to $50, residents are encouraged to install these devices to deter crime, particularly in high-traffic or vulnerable areas. Furthermore, 63% of respondents indicated they would be willing to share their security footage with local law enforcement, significantly amplifying the potential impact of such devices. Expanding camera-sharing programs could enhance surveillance coverage across the community.

Our survey also emphasized the importance of community participation in crime prevention. Residents expressed a strong willingness to be proactive by reporting suspicious activities and taking part in neighborhood watch efforts. The open-ended responses from the community underscored the need for a multifaceted approach that includes boosting police visibility, providing resources to empower residents, and addressing broader concerns such as homelessness and drug use. Collaboration between the community and city authorities will be key to making these initiatives effective.
While our initial survey didn’t delve into socioeconomic factors or the impact of specific law enforcement strategies, we believe future research should explore these elements to provide a more comprehensive understanding of crime prevention dynamics in Hagerstown. Addressing the root causes of crime, including economic disparities and policing practices, will be essential for developing long-term solutions.
The findings of our independent survey offer a clear starting point for addressing crime in Hagerstown through community-driven initiatives. By focusing on readily implementable solutions, such as increasing the use of security cameras and fostering a culture of community vigilance, Hagerstown residents have the opportunity to take a proactive role in making their neighborhoods safer. We at Radio Free Hub City emphasize that community engagement, resourcefulness, and strategic planning are crucial to enhancing public safety. We encourage policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and local leaders to collaborate with residents to refine and deploy these recommendations, ensuring that Hagerstown can effectively tackle its crime challenges and create a safer environment for all.
