Sharpsburg’s Annual Memorial Day Parade

One of the most notable events this Memorial Weekend is the Sharpsburg Memorial Day Parade. Set to take place on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. on Main Street, the event will begin with a wreath laying ceremony at the war memorials in the town square. Following this tribute, the parade will commence at 2:00 p.m.

The Sharpsburg Memorial Day Parade is a historic event, having occurred every year since the dedication of Antietam National Cemetery on September 17, 1867. This tradition marks it as the longest continuously held Memorial Day parade in the United States. This year’s parade will honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, with a special tribute to Vietnam War veterans.

Additional Ceremonies at Marty Snook Park

Another significant event will take place at Marty Snook Park on Thursday, May 30th at 9:00 a.m. Here, attendees will gather at the war memorial for a wreath laying and ceremony. This event is an opportunity for community members to pay their respects and honor the memory of those who have served and sacrificed.

Honoring Veterans and Their Families

The City of Hagerstown, along with Sharpsburg and other participating communities, recognizes and appreciates the incredible sacrifices made by veterans, their families, friends, and support networks. Memorial Day is a time to reflect on these sacrifices and express gratitude for the freedoms and security their service has provided.

These events not only honor the memory of those who have died in military service but also serve as a reminder of the ongoing commitment and support for veterans and their families. As communities come together to lay wreaths, deliver remarks, and march in parades, the collective act of remembrance reinforces the profound respect and appreciation held for the nation’s armed forces.
