Communities across Washington County are set to commemorate Memorial Day with a series of events recognizing the sacrifices made by U.S. military personnel. In Hagerstown, Mayor William McIntire and Councilmembers Caroline Anderson, Tiara Burnett, and Sean Flaherty will participate in a sequence of memorial activities on Monday afternoon. The day begins at 1 p.m. with the Morris Frock American Legion Post 42’s annual Memorial Day program at the Washington County Circuit Courthouse. Mayor McIntire will deliver welcoming remarks before city officials lay a wreath on behalf of the administration. Additional wreaths will be placed at memorials throughout the city, including locations at Rose Hill Cemetery, South Walnut Street, Jonathan Street, Potomac Avenue, and East North Avenue.

Smithsburg will hold its Memorial Day observance on Friday, May 30, at 2 p.m. at Smithsburg Veterans Park by the war memorials. The event will feature the Smithsburg Middle School Band performing the national anthem and a presentation of colors by the Marine Corps League. The keynote address will be delivered by COL Laura Marfut, a retired officer with 32 years of service in the United States Army and Army Reserve.

Sharpsburg is preparing to host the 158th edition of its Memorial Day Parade, recognized as the longest continuously held parade of its kind in America. This year’s commemoration is scheduled for Saturday, May 24, with a ceremony at 11 a.m. followed by the parade at 2 p.m. along Main Street. The 2025 parade theme is “Honoring the 250th Anniversary of the Birth of America’s Armed Forces,” and organizers are encouraging public participation through registration on the town’s website.

Boonsboro will hold its own tribute on Sunday, May 25. Activities begin with a wreath-laying ceremony and memorial service at 1 p.m. at the World War I monument in front of Town Hall. The Memorial Day Parade will follow at 2 p.m., proceeding along Main Street from the Boonsboro School complex to Reeder’s Alley.
