The Office of the State Fire Marshal is seeking public assistance in an investigation into a fire deemed incendiary in nature, which occurred on September 1, 2026, at approximately 8:56 AM. The incident took place at a commercial strip center located on Wesel Boulevard in Hagerstown, Washington County, containing well known stores such as Byers Market, Roy Rogers, and Little Caesars Pizza.

The blaze was reportedly discovered by an employee. The area of origin has been preliminarily identified as being exterior to the structure, near a gas meter. Responding to the scene was the Hagerstown City Fire Department, with five firefighters and one alarm required to bring the situation under control. The fire was contained within five minutes of their arrival. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths were reported as a result of the incident, and no individuals were displaced from their homes or businesses.

Further details released by the State Fire Marshal indicate that a caller reported observing an individual igniting a fire close to the gas meter before departing the scene in a vehicle. Authorities are urging anyone who may possess information pertinent to this investigation to come forward. Individuals with relevant details are encouraged to contact the State Fire Marshal’s Western Regional Office at 301-766-3888. An arson hotline is also available for anonymous tips at 1-800-492-7529. The Office of the State Fire Marshal is a division of the Maryland Department of State Police, tasked with safeguarding citizens through education, inspection, investigation, and fire protection engineering.
