Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is initiating a significant voluntary safety recall encompassing 844,027 vehicles across multiple models, as reported by the manufacturer. The recall addresses a software defect that may prevent the rearview camera image from displaying during backing maneuvers. This issue, identified as a potential noncompliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111 concerning rear visibility, could increase the risk of a crash.

The affected vehicles include a wide range of 2026 and 2027 model year light-duty vehicles. Among them are 16,838 units of the 2026-2027 Dodge Charger, 49,036 units of the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 39,738 units of the 2026 Jeep Gladiator, 10,379 units of the 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L, 4,119 units of the 2026 Jeep Compass, 108,804 units of the 2026 Ram 2500, 170,033 units of the 2026 Jeep Wrangler, and 131,681 units of the 2026-2027 Chrysler Pacifica. Additionally, the recall covers 33,047 units of the 2026 Jeep Cherokee, 22,950 units of the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, 26,225 units of the 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, 444 units of the 2026 Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid, 14,077 units of the 2026 Chrysler Voyager, 211,114 units of the 2026 Ram 1500, 5,539 units of the 2026 Ram ProMaster, and a mere 3 units of the 2026 Ram ProMaster EV. Production dates for the affected vehicles span from May 2025 to July 2026, depending on the specific model.

The identified defect stems from a radio software issue that may cause the rearview camera image to fail to display during a backing event. This failure means the system does not default to showing the rearview image as required by FMVSS No. 571.111, which mandates that the rear visibility system defaults to displaying the image and meets specific field of view and image size requirements at the beginning of each backing event. No warning lights or indicators are provided to alert drivers to this malfunction. The problem was first investigated by FCA US Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance in early May 2026, with engineers reviewing warranty data, field records, and production information. By July 15, 2026, the company recognized the issue and subsequently determined on August 6, 2026, that a noncompliance with FMVSS No. 111 existed.
The remedy for this recall will involve a software update to the vehicle’s radio system. Owners of affected vehicles will have their radios updated either wirelessly via an Over-The-Air (OTA) update, if their vehicle is capable, or by visiting a dealership for a USB update. Chrysler will notify dealers about the recall on or about August 20, 2026, and will begin notifying vehicle owners starting September 1, 2026. The VINs of affected vehicles will be searchable on or about August 20, 2026, allowing owners to check their vehicle’s recall status. Chrysler has indicated that it will follow a general reimbursement plan for any costs incurred by owners prior to this notification, should they have already addressed the issue. The manufacturer advises drivers of affected vehicles that do not have a functioning rearview camera to park outside and exercise extreme caution when backing, as the rearview image may not be visible.
