Hagerstown is preparing to send a message to the future, inviting residents to contribute to a 2026 Time Capsule that will be sealed and opened in 2076, marking the nation’s 300th anniversary. This initiative, part of Hagerstown’s larger America 250 celebration, aims to capture and preserve the essence of life in the city today for citizens fifty years from now. The project offers a unique opportunity for individuals and families to leave a lasting mark on their community’s history.

We didn't pick our name by accident. While other outlets are proud to be government 'Partners,' we are proud to be exactly what our namesake requires: Free from government influence, and free from government censorship. We don't lock our news behind a paywall, will you help us keep it that way? If you're tired of news sweetened with confirmation bias that never questions the 'official story', consider becoming a monthly supporter. Just $5/month helps fund our local reporting, live election night coverage, and more.
Residents are encouraged to submit items that represent life in Hagerstown in 2026. These contributions can take many forms, including handwritten letters addressed to future generations, family or community photographs, children’s artwork, personal stories detailing life in the present day, or small keepsakes that symbolize the city. Memorabilia from schools or local organizations, as well as messages expressing hopes, dreams, and aspirations for Hagerstown’s future, are also welcome. Each submitted item will contribute to a broader narrative, painting a picture of the city for those who will inhabit it in the latter half of the 21st century.
The official sealing of the new time capsule is scheduled to take place during the Stars & Stripes Block Party, a key event in Hagerstown’s America 250 festivities. The block party is slated for Thursday, July 9, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with activities centered in Downtown Hagerstown, specifically Public Square and South Potomac Street. This celebratory event will also feature the opening of Hagerstown’s original Bicentennial Time Capsule, originally sealed in 1976. This dual event will allow the community to reflect on the past 50 years before sending their own contemporary messages into the future for the next half-century.
Participation in this historical project requires residents to complete a submission form, submit any associated fees, and review detailed guidelines for acceptable items. Further information and access to the submission form can be found through the City of Hagerstown’s Community Engagement Office. By contributing to the 2026 Time Capsule, individuals will be leaving a legacy that future residents of Hagerstown can discover and learn from, offering a tangible connection to the city’s past and present.
