Further community involvement is planned for Saturday, July 4th, when Downtown Hagerstown Main Street participates in Washington County’s America 250 celebration at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center, also known as the Ag Expo Center. Visitors can engage with the Downtown Hagerstown Main Street booth to discover upcoming downtown events and receive exclusive giveaways, underscoring Hagerstown’s historical significance. A significant historical element of the celebration will occur on Tuesday, July 7th, with the opening of Hagerstown’s 1976 Bicentennial Time Capsule. Located in Hagerstown City Park, outside the Rose Garden and near the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, the time capsule has remained sealed for 50 years. Community members will have the opportunity to witness the unveiling of items preserved by residents in 1976, providing a direct connection to the city’s past. This event is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
The series of events will culminate on Thursday, July 9th, with the Stars & Stripes Block Party in downtown Hagerstown. This free community celebration will take place along South Potomac Street from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The block party will feature the public opening of the 1976 Time Capsule at 6:00 p.m., in partnership with the Antietam Exchange Club of Hagerstown. Attendees can also enjoy live music by the Longmeadow Mining Company, engage with historical and cultural organizations, and participate in family-friendly activities and patriotic programming. This event is designed to be the city’s signature downtown commemoration of America 250, uniting residents of all ages to celebrate the nation’s birthday and Hagerstown’s own heritage.
The City of Hagerstown encourages widespread participation in these diverse events as the community joins the nation in marking this significant anniversary.
