Law enforcement agencies have announced temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) will be in place around Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and surrounding areas during the SAIL250 Maryland event and Airshow Baltimore. These restrictions, effective from June 24 through June 30, prohibit the operation of drones and other unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) within specific airspace zones. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, the FBI Baltimore Field Office, and the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Maryland – National Capital Region are coordinating these measures to ensure public safety during the maritime celebration.
These temporary flight restrictions are designed to create a secure environment for the large number of participants and spectators expected for SAIL250 Maryland and the associated airshow. The restricted airspace will encompass areas including Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, Fells Point, North Locust Point, Under Armour Pier, Baltimore Peninsula, and Martin State Airport. Flying a drone in these designated zones during the specified dates and times is considered a federal offense. Violators could face significant consequences, including criminal fines up to $100,000, potential prison sentences, and the confiscation of their drone.

The implementation of these TFRs underscores the potential hazards associated with unauthorized drone activity. Unmanned aircraft operating in restricted airspace can pose a direct threat to other aircraft, as well as individuals on the ground, by creating unpredictable safety and security risks. The initiative aims to protect not only attendees and participants of the SAIL250 event, including ship crews, cadets, and midshipmen, but also aviators, critical infrastructure such as power lines and communication towers, and the general public.
Drone operators are strongly advised to exercise due diligence before any flight. It is imperative to check for active flight restrictions using FAA-approved services, such as the B4UFLY application and its authorized providers. These tools offer essential, real-time information on temporary flight restrictions, restricted airspace, and other advisories relevant to an operator’s location. A comprehensive list of all active TFRs can also be found on the FAA website. Authorities will be actively monitoring the airspace for any illegal drone activity and are committed to investigating and prosecuting any misuse of drones that jeopardizes public safety. The public is encouraged to report any observed unsafe drone operations immediately by calling 911.
