The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the arrest of Abraham Hermosillo Alvarez, a Mexican national, for his alleged role as the ringleader in a foiled terrorist plot targeting the UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House. Alvarez is reported to have entered the country on a visitor visa and remained after its expiration, later being granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status by the Obama Administration. The incident highlights significant national security concerns and the potential for individuals to exploit immigration pathways.
According to information released by DHS, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) apprehended Alvarez in Omaha, Nebraska, on June 14. He is accused of planning and orchestrating a mass-casualty attack intended to harm government officials and other attendees at the UFC event. The plot reportedly involved the use of “counter snipers” and drones, with the stated objective of maximizing casualties. In addition to Alvarez, four other individuals were arrested over the preceding weekend in Ohio, Missouri, and California in connection with the same alleged plot.

Federal charges were announced by the Department of Justice (DOJ) on June 16 for all five suspects. Alvarez, who allegedly used the alias “Shepherd,” faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit violence on White House grounds. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on Alvarez, indicating a request for his transfer into ICE custody upon the conclusion of any criminal proceedings and for potential deportation.
Alvarez initially entered the United States on a B2 visitor visa, which expired in December 2001, meaning he remained in the country unlawfully for over two decades. His DACA status was granted in 2014. The DHS statement emphasizes that Alvarez should not have been allowed to remain in the country and that he will face legal consequences and eventual removal. The investigation into the full scope of the plot and any potential accomplices continues.
