The City of Hagerstown Parks & Recreation division is launching a series of new historical experiences, inviting residents to connect with the city’s founding and its role in the American Revolution. These offerings aim to bring history to life, showcasing the legacy of town founder Jonathan Hager and the experiences of those who lived through the era of independence.
Starting Memorial Day weekend and running through the July 4th weekend, the Jonathan Hager House and Museum will host “Jonathan Hager, The Patriot” tours. These tours will be available on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Hager House through the perspective of Revolutionary War Maryland. In addition to the ongoing tours, the museum will present a special one-day living history event on Saturday, June 6th, titled “1776: Hager’s Town at War.” This event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will immerse attendees in the atmosphere of a community on the cusp of independence. Living historians will be present to discuss the lives of Revolutionary War-era residents of Washington County and demonstrate how they supported the Patriot cause. The event aims to provide insights into the challenges faced by an 18th-century soldier and explore the motivations of those in western Maryland who risked their livelihoods for independence.
“1776: Hager’s Town at War” will feature a variety of activities, including demonstrations of 18th-century military drills, musket and rifle firing, and a dedication ceremony for Hagerstown and Washington County’s new Liberty Tree. Younger attendees will have the chance to enjoy a petting zoo and complimentary pony rides. The City Park Train Hub will also participate in the day’s festivities with a free “All Aboard America 250” celebration from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., offering Tommy 202 wagon rides, balloons, and face painting. Further details regarding these events and future programs at the Jonathan Hager House and Museum can be found on the City of Hagerstown website at http://www.hagerhouse.org or by following the ‘Jonathan Hager House Museum’ on Facebook.
