The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) for Washington County has officially designated May 2026 as both Drug Treatment Court Month and Jury Appreciation Month. The board also approved the Fiscal Year 2027 Operating and Capital Budgets during their recent public meeting.
The proclamation recognizing May as Drug Treatment Court Month underscores the vital role these specialized courts play in addressing substance use and mental health disorders. By integrating accountability with evidence-based treatment and recovery support services, these programs aim to foster long-term positive outcomes for individuals, their families, and the broader community. The BOCC acknowledged that the success of drug treatment courts extends beyond individual recovery, contributing to reduced crime rates, lower incarceration and court expenses, and improved public safety and health partnerships. These courts are a significant component of the national effort to create lasting positive change for participants and their communities.

In addition to acknowledging drug treatment courts, the Board of County Commissioners also dedicated May 2026 as Jury Appreciation Month. This proclamation serves to honor the citizens who fulfill their civic obligation by serving on juries, a cornerstone of the American judicial system. Jury service is essential for ensuring fair and impartial trials, and the BOCC recognized the dedication of Washington County residents who participate in this crucial legal process. The Circuit Court for Washington County is actively working to enhance jury service by promoting accessibility, effectiveness, and inclusivity, with ongoing initiatives focused on encouraging greater civic engagement, mitigating the burdens on jurors, and equipping them with resources for informed decision-making.
Furthermore, the Board of County Commissioners has adopted the Fiscal Year 2027 Operating and Capital Budgets. Following a public budget presentation, the board confirmed that the overall budget remains consistent with the initial proposal, with only minor internal adjustments made for departmental allocations within the General Fund. The Capital Improvement Program for FY2027 also remains unchanged from its draft form. Residents seeking detailed information about the adopted FY2027 budget can refer to the FY2027 Citizen’s Guide to the Budget, available online.
During the meeting, the BOCC also took action on several other important matters. This included approving multiple appointments and reappointments to various county boards and commissions. Additionally, the commissioners approved several grant-related items, including funding awards and grant applications designed to support a range of initiatives. These grants will benefit senior services, community programs, and regional development projects throughout Washington County. Notably, the board approved the acceptance of FY27 Senior Citizens Activities Center grant funding, which will be utilized to support senior center staffing without requiring any local financial contribution.
