An incident at Meritus Medical Center on the evening of May 14, 2026, resulted in a security guard sustaining stab wounds and the suspect being taken into custody following a confrontation with law enforcement. Responding units from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the medical center in reference to a reported stabbing.
Upon arrival at the scene, deputies were informed that a female security guard had been attacked with a knife by a male suspect in the hospital’s cafeteria. Law enforcement officers proceeded to the 1800 wing of the hospital, where the suspect was believed to be located. As officers entered the hallway, they encountered the individual still in possession of a large kitchen knife. Authorities issued commands for the suspect to drop the weapon.
The suspect complied by dropping to his knees and subsequently began to stab himself in the neck with the knife. A deputy utilized a Taser, which enabled officers to safely apprehend the suspect without further injury to anyone present. The victim, the security guard, is currently receiving medical treatment for her injuries.

The individual identified as the suspect has been named as Timothy Franklin Wallech, a 39-year-old resident of Hagerstown. Following treatment for his injuries, Wallech was taken to the Washington County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond. He faces several charges in connection with the incident, including attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has acknowledged the assistance provided by the Hagerstown Police Department and the Maryland State Police during the response to this event. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have stated that there is no current threat to the public stemming from this incident. In connection with the active investigation, the public can expect to observe an increased police presence at Meritus Medical Center. Further information will be disseminated as it becomes available. It is important to note that all individuals charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
