The Washington County Arts Council (WCAC) has announced the appointment of Chris Brewer as its new Executive Director, marking a significant transition for the historic arts organization. Brewer’s tenure with the WCAC spans 13 years, during which he served as Gallery Manager, developing extensive experience in gallery operations and fostering connections within the regional artist community. His new role officially began on January 19, 2026, and he is tasked with guiding the council through its next phase of development.
As the new Executive Director, Brewer will assume responsibility for the strategic direction of WCAC’s various programs. These initiatives include the organization’s gallery exhibitions, the Gallery Shop which showcases the work of over 170 regional artists, grant programs designed to support local arts projects, and key fundraising events like the annual Art of Cooking. A central part of his mandate will be the implementation of WCAC’s Strategic Plan for 2025-2027. This plan emphasizes increasing community involvement, reinforcing collaborations with other organizations, and securing the council’s enduring financial health. The Washington County Arts Council, established in 1967, functions as the designated County Arts Agency for Washington County. It operates free-admission gallery spaces situated in Hagerstown’s Arts & Entertainment District, hosting between eight and ten exhibitions each year and engaging with thousands of individuals annually. The WCAC is also initiating a search for a new Gallery Manager to support its operations.
