A large tennis bubble at Ida Lee Park in Leesburg, Virginia, experienced a structural failure on Sunday afternoon, collapsing around 2 p.m. According to the Town of Leesburg, there were no injuries to staff or the public as the facility was unoccupied at the time of the incident. The collapse is currently under investigation, with initial assessments suggesting a substantial tear in the plastic membrane may have led to the loss of air pressure.
The collapsed bubble, which covered three former outdoor tennis courts, was installed in 2022. Town officials have initiated contact with the bubble’s manufacturer to develop a plan for its repair. Residents who utilize the Ida Lee Tennis Center should anticipate further announcements regarding potential adjustments to class schedules and court reservation policies. The facility will remain closed on Monday, January 26, to allow for a comprehensive assessment of the situation. This assessment will include an evaluation of the condition of a second, adjacent tennis bubble before a decision is made on reopening the Ida Lee Tennis Center. The public is being advised to stay clear of the area surrounding the collapsed structure until further notice.
