Washington County Indivisible is organizing a protest rally to take place on the Public Square in downtown Hagerstown on Tuesday, January 6, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. According to the organizers, the event aims to address multiple issues, including alleged illegal actions in Venezuela, the January 6, 2021 incident at the Capitol, and to call for accountability regarding actions taken by the Trump administration.

The protest is intended to draw attention to attack by the United States against Venezuela. During the attack, the United States captured Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro Moros and has charged him and other high-ranking officials with multiple Federal crimes. These charges stem from an alleged multi-decade drug trafficking conspiracy involving significant cocaine shipments destined for the United States. Documents unsealed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York reportedly outline an alleged collaboration between Venezuelan leaders and designated narco-terrorist organizations, such as the FARC, ELN, Sinaloa Cartel, Zetas, and Tren de Aragua. The indictment accuses these groups of utilizing Venezuelan institutions and officials to facilitate the movement of thousands of tons of cocaine into the U.S.

Previous protests organized by Indivisible have mostly been peaceful, but several have seen acts of violence towards counter-protesters, including a June protest ending in a scuffle after the event, and an incident in October where a Maryland Delegate candidate was captured on video apparently punching a counter-protester. While charges were dismissed involving the June incident, the October incident, involving Ocewana Baker (D), resulted in multiple charges against the candidate, with judicial proceedings ongoing under Maryland case D-112-CR-25-002431. Officer scheduling for Baker’s trial is set to occur on January 8th.
