A rally advocating for the protection of democracy took place at Hagerstown’s Public Square on March 4 at 5 p.m. The event, titled “No Kings March 4th for Democracy,” was part of a series of demonstrations held nationwide on the same day. The rally was organized by volunteers and supported by (but not organized by) the United Democrats of Washington County.

Participants engaged in a peaceful protest, walking along the sidewalks with homemade signs urging political leaders to safeguard democratic principles and protect the nation from what organizers described as a “fascist coup.” The demonstration aimed to send a strong message about the importance of democratic governance and the need for accountability in leadership.

The rally in Hagerstown mirrored similar events across the country, reflecting growing concerns among some citizens about threats to democratic institutions. Organizers emphasized the nonviolent nature of the protest, focusing on raising awareness and encouraging civic engagement.

In addition to the anti-Trump and pro-Ukraine protesters, local activist Shaun Porter was present protesting one of the County Commissioners. At least one counter-protester was also present but no signs were visible.
