The newly finished segment comprises 3,250 linear feet of roadway. This key infrastructure project features a four-lane, open-section design and included the installation of a major culvert as part of its construction. Crucially, the extension establishes a direct link between MD Route 63, known locally as Greencastle Pike, and the existing Halfway Boulevard near Newgate Boulevard.
Strategically, the extension provides Washington County residents and businesses with an important alternative route connecting two major interstate arteries, I-81 and I-70. This enhanced connectivity is essential for streamlining logistics and improving access for heavy truck traffic that serves the region’s distribution centers and manufacturing hubs. For residents, this dedication of a better-designed route is expected to reduce strain on surrounding local road networks, making daily commutes smoother, while simultaneously opening up prime real estate for economic development in this major growth corridor. Infrastructure improvements like this extension are designed to provide foundational support for sustained employment opportunities and a broader tax base within the county.
The successful completion of this large-scale project was the result of extensive collaboration between numerous public agencies and private entities. Key public partners involved in the funding, planning, and implementation included the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), the Maryland Department of Transportation – District 6, and Washington County Government itself. Private sector partners, integral to ensuring the development efforts could proceed, included Bowman Development Corp., Hitachi Rail, and the AC&T – Fulton Family. Construction services for the project were officially executed by William C. Hetzer Inc., which served as the project’s contractor.
Area residents and businesses are advised that the new road will become fully operational following the celebratory event scheduled for later this month. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony is slated to take place on Monday, December 16, 2025, at the project site located at 16650 Halfway Boulevard, running from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The opening of the extension marks the achievement of a long-term county goal to significantly enhance regional infrastructure, support improved logistics, and ensure increased economic resilience for the greater Hagerstown area and the surrounding Washington County community.
