The project, which took place in October 2025, involved planting a variety of native, climate-resilient trees. Participants, including members of Boy Scout Troop 14, Cub Scout Pack 14, and the Antietam-Conococheague Watershed Alliance (ACWA), contributed to improving air quality, increasing shade, and enhancing the visual appeal of the area. This specific lot was identified as a transportation corridor and an urban heat island, making the introduction of green infrastructure particularly beneficial. The planting efforts established an ecological and visual buffer along the roadway, contributing to a more comfortable and safer environment for pedestrians.

Community involvement was a key component of the project’s success. The Town of Smithsburg utilized its social media channels to promote the tree planting event, which garnered significant positive feedback from residents. Many community members expressed their appreciation, noting how the new trees have beautified the area and “added so much life.” The Town of Smithsburg Department of Public Works has committed to the ongoing care of the newly planted trees. This maintenance plan includes regular watering, adjusted based on weather conditions, and inspections and repairs of tree shelters and stakes. Mulch will also be replenished to ensure adequate moisture retention and to manage weed growth. Furthermore, the town plans to collaborate with community groups for periodic check-ins and seasonal care, aiming to ensure the long-term health and vitality of the trees.

The Geiser Way Lot tree planting project saw 62 trees planted, including species such as Washington Hawthorn, Allegheny Serviceberry, Bur Oak, Wild Plum, Sweetbay Magnolia, American Holly, Black Gum, Eastern Red Cedar, Eastern Redbud, Hackberry, and Red Maple. The volunteer effort accounted for approximately three hours per participant. In addition to the direct environmental benefits, the project has stimulated renewed community interest in future greening efforts. The Town of Smithsburg has observed increased public use of the Geiser Way Lot and a heightened engagement from residents regarding future planting initiatives.
