The incident began at approximately 4:31 a.m. when emergency services received reports of a fire at a residence situated between Shade Bower and St. Paul Road. Upon arrival, fire crews encountered heavy fire conditions consuming the first floor and basement of the structure. Despite the swift actions of nearly sixty firefighters and support staff, firefighters were forced to evacuate during suppression efforts, and the fire tragically claimed the lives of two adult females and one adult male. Two family dogs were successfully rescued from the burning home and have been placed in the care of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office. The coordinated response involved numerous agencies, including fire departments from Clear Spring, Williamsport, Maugansville, Funkstown, Community Volunteer Fire, Longmeadow, Hancock, Greencastle, and Mercersburg, as well as Community Rescue Service, Clear Spring Ambulance, the Maryland State Fire Marshal Office, and Emergency Support Services. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control by 4:56 a.m. The Division of Emergency Services coordinated the multi-agency effort.
This was the second fatal fire in less than a week in Washington County, following a previous Hagerstown fire last week. Residents are reminded of the importance of fire safety and preparedness in their homes. While this incident is under investigation, community members are encouraged to ensure they have functioning smoke detectors and a well-practiced fire escape plan. Information on fire prevention can typically be found through local fire departments and official county resources.
