The town has secured a grant of nearly $5,000 from the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Urban Tree Planting Program, which will cover a significant portion of the expenses for trees and necessary planting materials like mulch and protective wire cages. Further financial support has been provided by the Town Council, with an allocation of almost $1,600 designated to cover any additional materials required for the project. This combined funding ensures that the ambitious tree planting plans can move forward effectively.

The town is organizing a community Tree Planting Day scheduled for Saturday, October 25th, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This event will take place at the vacant lot located on Geiser Way. A rain date has been set for Sunday, October 26th, during the same hours, should weather conditions necessitate a postponement. Volunteers are invited to participate in planting 70 trees, with the opportunity to learn proper tree planting techniques and contribute directly to the beautification of the lot. This event also offers a preview of the broader vision for the lot’s future development. All necessary supplies and materials will be provided, and no prior experience is needed to join.

In addition to the planting event, the committee has developed detailed plans for the lot’s future. A presentation outlining these plans is scheduled to be delivered to the Town Council on October 7th for final approval. Accompanying this presentation will be a conceptual drawing created by Colleen Corballis, the Town’s Landscape Architect, offering a visual representation of the proposed enhancements for the space.

This tree planting initiative represents a significant step in enhancing the community’s green infrastructure and public spaces. Residents are encouraged to participate in the Tree Planting Day to contribute to this civic improvement project.
