Scheduled for Saturday, November 1, the giveaway will take place at the festival field of Ida Lee Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents will have the opportunity to receive a free native tree sapling, with a minimum of 270 trees guaranteed. The event aims to promote the planting of climate-resilient species that are well-suited to the local environment. Attendees will also be able to consult with tree care specialists to ensure they select the most appropriate tree for their specific needs and planting location.

The selection of trees available includes a diverse range of native species, such as Pawpaw (Asimina triloba), Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis), Fringe Tree (Chionanthus virginicus), Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana), Spicebush (Lindera benzoin), Sweetbay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana), Black Gum/Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica), Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana), Southern Red Oak (Quercus falcata), and Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa). Each sapling will come with planting instructions.

As part of the Treesburg initiative, which began in April 2024, participants will be encouraged to document their tree plantings. This includes sharing the location and an image of their newly planted tree on the Treesburg Community Planting Map. Residents can also provide annual updates to track the growth of their trees, creating a collective record of the community’s commitment to urban forestry. This program aims to not only increase the tree canopy in Leesburg but also to provide benefits such as shade, support for pollinators, and enhanced wildlife habitats.
