The deceased individual has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for positive identification. Preliminary findings by Deputy State Fire Marshals indicate that the fire originated in the kitchen area of the home. Tragically, no working smoke alarms were found within the residence. An Accelerant Detection K9 named Quinn was deployed to assist investigators at the scene. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported in connection with this incident. This marks the first fatal fire recorded in Washington County this year. In response to this event, the Office of the State Fire Marshal is reiterating its strong recommendation for all Maryland residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms installed on every level of their homes and near sleeping areas. Resources and information on smoke alarm safety, as well as opportunities to request a smoke alarm, are available through the “Get Alarmed Maryland” initiative. Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding this fire to contact the Western Regional Office at 301-766-3888. The exact cause of the blaze remains under active investigation.
